WHAT IS HAPKIDO?

Hapkido can be literally translated as "the path of coordinated energy." Each Hanja or Chinese character can be translated as follows:

Hap - unification, coordination, sum Ki - nature energy Do - path. An in-depth explanation of Hapkido could fill volumes, but we present here the principle of Hapkido's purpose and training.

Hapkido aims to harmonize with the earth, sky and nature. It is a study of valuing internal and external power. The character of this power can be found in coordination and harmonization. Follow these principles for defending yourself and others. Cultivate a sound character, healthy body, and the ability to protect yourself in any encounter.

In training that develops bones and muscles externally and gathers ki internally, the development of a body capable of smooth, fluid defenses along with devastating attacks. His techniques encompass point to circle (range of linear and circular techniques), synthesis of hardness ad softness (principle of One and Yang), which allows for the idea of transition between defensive and offensive techniques. Furthermore, the knowledge and use of pressure points and joints greatly enhances self-defense techniques, which makes it possible to turn the opponent's strength against him.

Also, although there may be no real separation of mental, physical and spiritual aspects of martial arts, for the sake of explanation for the unfamiliar, mental training can be classified into simbub (law of mind, refer to Kidohae curriculum), physical training in health as kibub (law of ki), training in self-defense as shinbub (law of the body).

The basis of Hapkido is ultimately an understanding of these basic elements of the human condition, so that of mind, body and ki. The head can be represented as a circle so that it can be held at a state level. Ki can be represented as a square so that healthy ki can be harnessed, drawn into cultivating fully. The body can be represented as a triangle, so it can be preferably in relation to development. These separate elements must also come together and seek harmony and coordination at a higher level.

Hapkido is performed primarily through physical movements, but through training, it is clear that there are other benefits at hand. There are the mental and philosophical teachings of positive living actions, along with the responsibility to follow the path of the righteous man, a true martial artist.
