HISTORY OF HAEDONG KUMDO

Haedong Kumdo was developed in 1982 by its founders: masters Kim Jeong-Ho and Na Han-Il. These two had trained two ancient Korean sword forms: Kichunmun with master Dae Yang Park and Shim-gumdo with master Kim Chang Sik.

The techniques of  Kichun  inherited by Haedong Kumdo is present in some circular movements with the sword and is also found in Meditation and breathing (Danjun) movements; already the  Shimgumdo  is known to have a characteristic system of meditation and self-defense without the use of the sword (ho shin south) and techniques with two swords (Ssangkumbup).

The name Haedong Kumdo comes from “Haedong Seong-Guk Balhae” which is the name of an ancient Kingdom of  Balhae  (698 AD - 935 AD), which was to the northeast of Korea, near the border of northern China and eastern Siberia. The name Haedong Kumdo consists of “Hae” meaning “ocean”, “Dong” meaning the East; “Kum” means the sword and “Do” becomes the “way to be followed”.

Haedong Kumdo can mean either "Way of the East Sea Sword" as well as the "Way of the Sword of Korea".

Unlike other oriental schools that focus on fighting a single opponent giving him a clean blow; the traditional Korean sword, in turn, focuses on facing multiple opponents, as the sword is only activated when you are at war.

Another feature is the circular moves, in order to attack opponents who can be anywhere on the battlefield, while other oriental sword schools teach only linear moves.

The acrobatic movements that are part of the modern Korean sword, in the past were not part of combats in war, the origin came through the ceremonies and festivities, where the purpose was to impress their King who at the same time wanted to impress Generals and soldiers from other countries. .

The Haedong Kumdo epitomizes the entire Korean warrior past through battlefield combat during the executions of the Ssangsu Gumbup (Sword Forms) and Ssang Gumbup (Two Sword Forms).

Haedong Kumdo tries to offer a solution to some of these modern world problems like stress, obesity and morbidity; through training, the practitioner of Haedong Kumdo will learn to have basic ideals of posture, self-control, focus, meditation and breathing exercises, keeping him away from stress, idleness and anxiety that cause harm to health. Haedong Kumdo, as well as a martial art, seeks that people have values, self-esteem and sociability, aiming to corroborate people who want to get rid of the evils of everyday life...
