THE 9 PRINCIPLES OF HAEDONG KUMDO

1. You should always handle a wooden sword (Mok Gum, 목검 / 木劍) as you would a real sword (Jin Gum, 진검 / 真劍); with total caution and respect.

2. Always make an effort to achieve the union between the mind (Sim, 심 / 心) and the sword (Gum, 검 / 劍), so that both become one.

3. Those who practice with the sword must understand the average rhythm (Joong Yul, 중율 / 中律) of all movements. This prevents them from being performed carelessly or without concentration.

4. The sword is used to practice Kumdo (검도 / 劍道) forms, which represent the formal way of walking the path of the sword.

5. The practice of Kumdo (검도 / 劍道) is a path of discipline (Gye, 계 / 戒) and tranquility. Moreover, it purifies both the body and the mind (Sim Shin, 심신 / 心身). Therefore, it should never be performed casually or negligently.

6. Anyone practicing the sword must maintain focus and be free of distractions. It is essential to cultivate an introspective attitude (Jung Sim, 중심 / 精心) and train with total dedication.

7. Those who possess a sword should be attentive to others, cultivate an open mind (Yeo Ui, 여의 / 謙虛), and practice humility (Gyom Son, 겸손 / 謙遜).

8. Remember that practicing with the sword is not only a martial training but also an activity beneficial for health (Geon Gang, 건강 / 健康) and the revitalization of life (Saeng Myung, 생명 / 生命).

9. Always be grateful to your teacher (Seon Saeng Nim, 선생님 / 先生) and show absolute respect for the way of the sword (Geumdo Do, 검도도 / 劍道道). This attitude will allow you to attain true wisdom (Ji Hye, 지혜 / 智慧).
