HAEDONG KUMDO

Haedong Kumdo (해동검도 / 海東劍道) is a Korean martial art based on real combat techniques. The training simulates fights against numerous opponents, using a real sword. This focus on combat realism distinguishes Haedong Kumdo from other more well-known systems, which typically feature more stylized or sport-oriented characteristics.
Historically, the Korean territory, before it was named Korea (한국 / 韓國), was made up of three main kingdoms: Koguryo (고구려 / 高句麗), Baekje (백제 / 百濟), and Silla (신라 / 新羅). Among them, the most powerful was the kingdom of Koguryo, recognized for its advanced military system and warrior tradition.
Haedong Kumdo’s origin is attributed to the military system of this kingdom, with records dating back over 1500 years. This historical legacy makes Haedong Kumdo one of the most authentic and deeply rooted martial arts in Korean culture.
It is important to highlight that throughout history, Korea faced constant threats from hostile forces.
These invasions resulted in the destruction of much of the records of ancient Korean martial arts. Despite this, two key historical documents survived: the Moo Ye Do Bo Tong Ji (무예도보통지 / 武藝圖譜通志) and the Moo Yeh Jee Bo (무예지보 / 武藝之譜). These texts provide a detailed view of Korea’s martial traditions, including sword combat techniques.
They are considered the only reliable sources for reconstructing and understanding the history of Korean swordsmanship.
In addition to preserving combat techniques, these records demonstrate that Korean martial arts were sophisticated and organized, involving not only the use of the sword but also other weapons and military strategies. From these documents, it was possible to revive ancient traditions and adapt them for the modern context.
Today, the military system that served as the foundation for this martial art has been democratized, making it accessible to all citizens. Haedong Kumdo has evolved to include practices that develop not only physical skills but also mental balance, discipline, and respect, reflecting the spirit of traditional martial arts.
Training in Haedong Kumdo involves fluid and precise movements, simulating battles against multiple opponents. Techniques such as cuts (베기 / 切り), blocks (막기 / 防ぎ), evasions, and circular movements are executed with real swords or replicas, requiring concentration and mastery. Additionally, practitioners develop their breathing (Ki Hap, 기합 / 氣合), posture, and internal energy control (Ki, 기 / 氣), connecting body and mind in perfect harmony.
The philosophy of Haedong Kumdo is also deeply rooted in the principles of respect and honor. Each practitioner is encouraged to apply the teachings beyond the dojo (Dojang, 도장 / 道場), incorporating values such as perseverance and humility into their daily lives.
Finally, Haedong Kumdo is not just a martial practice, but also a journey of self-discovery and cultural preservation. It honors Korea’s rich history while inspiring current and future generations to connect with their roots.
