DANCE WITH SWORD - KUMMU

Master Kim

Grandmaster Kim Jeong Seong

Kummu (검무 / 劍舞),

the Sword Dance, was created through the intense and long-term training of Grand Master Kim with the sword. He dedicated his life to studying and practicing sword techniques, incorporating a unique approach that combines technical skill with a deep artistic expression.

Over time, he added some of the traditional Korean rhythm (hanbok / 韓服) to the dance, which provided smoother movements and a sense of renewed energy. This rhythmic element makes both the mind and body feel alive, invigorated, and connected with the cultural and spiritual roots of Korea.

The practice of Kummu (검무 / 劍舞) is not only a form of martial art but also a means of cultivating mental focus, discipline, and balance. The combination of the fluid movement of the sword with traditional Korean music brings harmony between the body and mind, promoting a sense of inner peace. Anyone can practice and enjoy this form of expression, regardless of age or experience, making it an accessible yet profound practice.

All generations can train themselves and also have fun practicing this, as Kummu (검무 / 劍舞) is a practice that strengthens both the body and the spirit. The flexibility of the movements and the application of sword techniques with precision also promote physical strength, agility, and mental control. By learning the different forms and styles of this dance, practitioners can experience deep personal growth while maintaining a connection to Korean traditions.

  • Kum Mu (검무 / 劍舞) – Sword dance with one sword.

  • Ssangkum Mu (쌍검무 / 雙劍舞) – Sword dance with two swords, a practice that requires superior coordination and synchronization, challenging the practitioner to move with precision and grace.

  • Grup Kum Mu / Ssang Kum Mu (그룹 검무 / 雙劍舞) – Group dance with various forms, where teamwork is essential to perform the movements in a fluid and coordinated way.

  • Kyeok Kum Mu (격검무 / 擊劍舞) – Group sword dance with sparring type, a more dynamic form of training, where the interaction between participants simulates real combat situations while maintaining the elegance of the dance and discipline.
